Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use

Integrated Care for Mental Health and Substance Use Recovery, Together

Coordinated Care for the Whole Person

Mental health and substance use concerns often affect one another. Agape provides coordinated support for individuals who are experiencing both, helping patients address symptoms, strengthen recovery skills and reduce barriers to wellness.

Care May Include:

• Behavioral health and substance use assessment

• Individualized treatment and recovery planning

• Therapy and psychiatric services

• Medication management when clinically appropriate

• Relapse-prevention and coping-skills development

• Care coordination and connection to community resources

The appropriate level of care is determined through assessment. Patients who require detoxification, inpatient treatment or another level of care may be referred to an appropriate provider.

What Is Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment?

Co-occurring mental health and substance use treatment (also known as dual diagnosis treatment) is specialized care for individuals who are dealing with both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder at the same time — such as depression paired with alcohol dependence, or anxiety alongside opioid use. Because these conditions often influence and worsen each other, treating them separately is usually less effective. This integrated approach addresses both issues simultaneously through therapy, medication management, counseling, and support services, helping individuals understand the connection between their mental health and substance use while building healthier coping strategies for lasting recovery.
